Farm Bill 2018: An Overwhelming Victory for Hemp

Today, December 20, 2018, President Donald Trump signed the 2018 Farm Bill into law. In an overwhelming landslide with a final vote of 369-47, it had passed the US House of Representatives on Dec. 12, 2018.

Industrial hemp derived products, including CBD extract, will now become easier for people to locate and purchase. The option to grow hemp will also be more accessible to farmers interested in becoming part of an industry projected to grow to $22 billion by 2022.

After an 81-year ban on industrial hemp farming, the ban has finally been lifted. Farmers will now be able to ensure their hemp crops as an agricultural commodity, and they will also have access to normal federal benefits that are available for crops nationwide.

Is CBD Legal Now? Removing hemp from the Controlled Substances Act

Short answer: Federally, yes, CBD is legal. Statewide, most still have laws that will need to be revamped.

As a result of the Farm Bill’s passage, industrial hemp will no longer be included as part of the Controlled Substances Act. This makes it a huge win for defining products and extracts derived from hemp, such as CBD, which do not produce a high and are non-psychotropic.

Hemp CBD extracts containing less than 0.3% THC will be more accessible than ever, so people who need CBD the most will finally have access to be able to experience its nutritive benefits as they incorporate it into their healthy lifestyle.

Even though purchasing products derived from industrial hemp in the United States was previously legal, hemp was also listed as a schedule 1 drug alongside psychoactive cannabis.

For farmers, this means hemp is now able to be handled like any other crop. The bill gives them the ability to ensure their crops as well as other benefits. If you would like to learn more about the specifications around hemp cultivation click here.

The bill also opens a ton of doors to conduct further research into hemp’s properties and abilities as a natural curative.

Hemp education will broaden under the Farm Bill

Education about this incredible super-plant will be easier to access, now that industrial hemp is removed from the Controlled Substances Act.

Hemp has been used all over the world for years as a green alternative to fabrics, papers, plastics, and building materials, as well as providing complete nutrition and protein through its seeds. Hemp seed oil has even been found to provide as an excellent moisturizing agent in all natural, plant-based hair and skin care products.

We were first attracted to hemp not only because of its nutritive properties but also because it can be used to create a number of materials–like plastics–that are currently made with non-biodegradable chemicals.

“Hemp could become a solution for the man-made petrochemicals polluting our world,” Benhaim says.
